Chapter Two
Arden cursed. He wasn’t sure who he hated more at the moment, the person outside who was now beating on the door even harder, or himself for losing control. He had gotten so wrapped up in his intended target he’d almost forgotten why he’d put her under in the first place. With his spell on her broken, he stepped away from her and back to reality.
Nic shook her head and he knew she was trying to clear the cobwebs he’d spun with his Gift. Without maintained eye contact, the effects wore off right away and she’d only be left with the thought she’d had right before he’d taken her under. He hadn’t even gotten the chance to see how far he’d be able to go.
Her fingers flexed on the grip of her firearm as the knocking continued. She looked up at him and frowned. Her lips — the ones he’d been so close to tasting — parted, a question swirling in her stormy eyes. Then he saw the moment of indecision dissolve from her expression and he knew, just by looking at the set of her shoulders, she’d closed herself off again. He would have to work on breaking those walls down.
He offered her a serene smile, which she answered by narrowing her eyes and putting her hand up in a stay gesture.
Really? Did she think him a pet? He didn’t even pause before following her out into the kitchen, trying to ignore the fact that following at her heels made him feel like her lapdog.
Oh, he was going to enjoy breaking her.
The subtle shift in light shining through the single-pane windows told him dawn couldn’t be far off. He watched Nic creep toward the door. She took position on the left and nodded him over to the other side. He wasn’t too happy about being ordered around, but he saw her plan and took up the other corner.
The door rattled in its frame from the pounding visitor. She stepped up and leveled the gun at where the person’s head would be. Arden grasped the knob and bobbed his head at her once, then flung it open.
The person outside wasn’t expecting it and fell onto the kitchen floor in a messy pile. Before their guest could get up, Nic had the barrel pressed against the back of the stranger’s neck. Arden was impressed with how fast she had moved.
“Uhn — what the fuck?” Male. Human. And squirming under the weight of her knee in his back.
“I’m the only one who’s going to be asking questions, asshole,” she said. “I’m the one with the gun.”
Arden smiled. Under regular circumstances, her aggressiveness wouldn’t appeal to him. He preferred submissive bed partners. All of the women he used knew his status and would never dare to boss him around. But with Nic? He could picture her soft mouth making demands of him as he pressed inside of her.
Maybe allowing her to think she was in control would be to his benefit…and his pleasure.
